(5/27) Live Music: Spider Rockets w/Rootz EQ and Travis Morrison (Free Show)

  • The Vanguard Brew Pub & Distillery 504 North King Street Hampton, VA, 23669 United States (map)

Spider Rockets has built a dedicated national following for its distinctive combination of two-fisted blues rock, classic New Jersey Turnpike metal, alternative music, noisy punk, and a pinch of singalong pop, too. The group has toured with Saliva, Trapt, Puddle of Mudd, Saving Abel, and many others, and has won new adherents with every searing show.

This is music for high-speed drives. 'Along Came A Spider' is Spider Rockets’ fifth album, and its most self-assured and raucous, too. Spider Rockets’ frontwoman, Helena Cos, has always had a voice that stands up to the formidable sonic assault of her group, but this time, she crashes into the songs like a hurricane barreling ashore. Some credit for that must go to producer Dan Malsch who has also manned the boards for Tantric and Doro. Then again, Spider Rockets has always worked with first-rate hard rock producers, including Eric Rachel (Atreyu, Hatebreed) and the legendary Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans). Just call Spider Rockets a band of musicians whose time has come, and who have reached the top of their game, just as the world is starting to take notice.

The Rootz Equation is a 4-piece band with a unique mix of reggae-infused party music and traditional roots based Caribbean tunes. RootzEQ formed as a collaboration between guitarist/vocalist John Boyd and keys player Clay Ames. John was a grad student at UVa in Charlottesville where he was playing with the The Charlatones. Anticipating a move to the Tidewater area, he posted an ad on Craigslist looking for fellow musicians with like interests. Clay answered the ad, and they hit it off right away. Clay has played keys in several local bands over the last 10 years including Irievive, Lost Souls Society, and Livelyhoodz. Clay invited in veteran bassist Chuck Laney to join. While Chuck’s previous background was in R&B, funk, and rock, he quickly took to the unique style of playing required by the reggae groove. After auditioning several drummers, local veteran Kurt Patterson completed the line-up. Kurt is most well known as the percussionist for the successful local band Strange Rootz. The combination of Chuck and Kurt gives RootzEQ the rock-solid rhythm section that allows the band to create its unique interpretation of modern hits.
